Getting to know Reishi Mushroom

270px-Ganoderma_lucidum_01I first met Reishi Mushroom in Costa Rica, March 2014. That is, I actually felt it, that hard woody surface belonging to most shelf-like (growing on the sides of trees) mushroom. After a highly interesting lecture on the tumour-fighting benefits of Reishi, I decided to try my hand at producing a tincture and the results are noted below.




This is what I did:

1. Using a big jar, Organic Red Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) crushed as much as you  can – it’s great if you can get it in very small pieces or powder (the cell walls of these mushrooms are difficult to break down)
2. Add Everclear and let sit for 4 weeks
3. Pressed and added the alcohol-soaked mushroom to a double boiler
4. Cook slowly without boiling to retrieve the medicinal qualities for 2hrs
5. Strained off mushroom and boiled down until I ended up with the right amount to make a 30% alcohol extraction

I found a very handy tool to help me figure out the different amounts needed on the internet—thank goodness because Math is not one of my strong points!

Final result in a high potency adaptogen tincture/extract used for:
